Make Recycling A Part of Your Routine

This handy guide will help you become a part of the Nassau Recycling Community. Please print and keep it for your future reference. Our local Keep Nassau Beautiful non-profit organization is here to help with any questions you may have in your efforts to recycle your household or work waste.

Recycle

Why is Recycling a Great Thing?

  • Recycling one ton of paper saves 17 trees, 6953 gallons of water, 463 gallons of oil and 3 cubic yards of landfill space... that's what's involved in turning the raw material of wood into paper! ||
  • By sending less of your discards to the landfill...you save landfill space...it costs millions of dollars to construct and maintain landfills. ||
  • Saves money and creates jobs... the recycling and remanufacturing process creates about one million jobs in America and $236 billion in annual revenue. ||
  • Recycled materials take less energy to remanufacture. Recycled aluminum takes 95% less energy to make than new aluminum from bauxite ore! ||
  • If every family and business recycled all recyclables, trash going to the land fill would reduce by 75% in weight. ||
  • It's a great thing to do for the community. ||

Get ready to recycle!

The first step to successful recycling is to make a plan that will fit your lifestyle and help you recycle as part of your daily routine. Here are some points to consider:
1.As you read through this guide, think about the items you use that may be recycled. You will be surprised how many you have!
2.Select the recycling drop-off center closest to you and think about a good day you can plan for your drop-offs.
  3. Set up a bin, small trash can, bag or box for each type of item you plan to recycle. Don't make the containers too small and frustrate yourself with constant overflow.
  4. Get your children involved. This is a project even small children can" manage" and feel good about helping.
  5. Most product packaging has recycle information on the label, including plastic type.

Helpful Recycling Facts

Here's some good information based on frequent questions about recycling:

  • Avoid contamination! Please help in following the guidelines on which items can be put in which bins...for example, did you know aluminum foil is not the same type of aluminum that's in recyclable cans. Therefore, the foil does go in the trash and not the recycle bin. ||
  • A small piece of ceramic coffee cup can ruin an entire batch of molten glass. ||
  • The see-through window in envelopes and other junk mail paper types contaminates newsurint. If in doubt, throw it out ||
  • Slick magazines and catalogues have clay in them. Clay ruins newsprint. ||
  • Phone books have glue, a paper contaminant, in the binding. Phone books cannot be recycled at this time in Nassau County. ||
  • One gallon of used oil provides the same 2.5 quarts of lube oil as 42 gallons of crude oil. One gallon of improperly disposed oil pollutes 1,000,000 gallons of water. ||
  • Recycling one aluminum can saves the amount of energy to light one 100 watt bulb for 20 hours. ||
  • The average person reads 1,000 pounds of newsprint per year. Recycle your newspaper and save 7,000 gallons of water each year! ||
