Spotlight on Nassau Gardens
In her yard in Fernandina Beach, Jenny Fender has one of the beautiful Red Maples (Acer rubrum) that is indigenous to Nassau County, . It was 2 feet tall when it was given to her ten years ago. and now it is at least 35 feet tall. Most of the year it has pretty green leaves that turn red in the fall, but in the winter months there are gorgeous red seeds growing that are a wonderful contrast to its surroundings. They are often called helicopter seeds because of their shape and ability to auto rotate as they fall from the tree. Many of these Maple trees are growing in the woods along A1A and can be seen while driving by.
